George Muwanguzi LL.M, LL.B (MUK), Dip L.P (LDC) (Managing Partner)

George Muwanguzi is an advocate; legal consultant and civil society activist. Muwanguzi is a graduate of Makerere University, Bachelor & Master of laws (LL.B, Hons, and LL.M) He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (Bar Course) 1996, from the Law Development Centre (LDC) Kampala. Muwanguzi is  a fellow of Modern Legal and Legislative Drafting of the University of Sydney Law School. He successfully completed a series of designated courses in arbitration, obtaining an advanced certificate in Arbitration from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London where he was admitted as a member (MCIArb). He is an enrolled member of the Uganda bar – Uganda law Society, the Rwanda Bar – Rwanda Bar Association, the East African Law society and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London.

Muwanguzi started practicing law in Kampala – Uganda in 1996 with M/S Elue & Co. Advocates; eventually founding Muwanguzi & Associates one of the firms that merged to form ICON LAW. Muwanguzi  served as a long term capacity development consultant for the Rwandan Ministry of Justice in the process of establishing the Institute of Legal Practice and Development (ILPD). He worked on the development of the Institute’s bar course curriculum, training systems – including training methodology, teaching aids development, training evaluation –including tools as well as the initial recruitment and induction of staff. Muwanguzi further served as consultant and advisor on governance and human rights during the UN International Conference on Peace and Security in the Great Lakes Region; and later as consultant and advisor to the Rwandan Justice Sector Cluster in developing the first Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS.I.) for Rwanda.

In 2009 and 2010, Muwanguzi was hired as a Justice Sector Training Specialist by Chemonics International- a US Consultancy firm in the framework of implementing the Rwanda Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Threshold Program – Justice Strengthening project. The Programme conducted thorough training needs assessment for the whole Rwandan Justice Sector and for more than a year provided tailor-made training to all judicial Personnel in the sector, state attorneys and prosecutors as well as selected private advocates and formed a robust team of Training of Trainers that has continued to sharpen the capacities of Rwanda’s Justice Sector Personnel to date. Muwanguzi has  been one of the key persons on pioneering the organization of multi-partner law firms in Rwanda having been one of the founding partners of MRB Attorneys one of the big law firms in Rwanda. Muwanguzi has  advised on various corporate and commercial transactions at MRB Attorneys where he served as Senior Partner.

In contribution to the community, Muwanguzi served as General Secretary for the Makerere University Students Guild 1991; and later as Secretary General for the All Africa Students Union (AASU) Accra – Ghana 1992 -1995. He is the founding president of the United Nations Association of Uganda (UNAU) and he has  served as a civil society leader in the following roles: Chairperson of the Global Youth Caucus of the 7th Global Pan African Congress 1994, Member of the Global Youth Committee for the UN International Conference on Population & Development – (ICPD) Cairo Egypt 1994, Member representing East Africa on the International Civil Society Committee on the UN Conference on Financing for Development –  Mexico 2002; as well as a member of the International AIDS Society (IAS) Community Committee of the 2nd IAS  Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment & Prevention, Paris 2003.
